Scuba

I scuba dived for the first time yesterday, extraordinary, moray eels and barrel coral, schools of darting fish, long-finned yellow bannerfish nibbling at the reef. The mask creates distance like a screen, you can forget it’s real, because you don’t touch and it is all so strange. You have to remember to breathe, slow and deep and constant, as your lungs fill with more air than they have ever known, bubbles out to the surface, time seeming so short that an hour is a surprise…
